Get Credit Cards free of charge
I received an email from a reader, Jonathan, recently, with reference to my post on Don’t let credit cards rob you!. His question (extracted) was:
Sure, you may get all these credit cards to help you save through discounts and rebates, and they may be free for like a year or two, but after that, it doesn’t make sense anymore because you’ll have to pay like $60/year or for the Citibank Dividend, I think it’s more like $120 or $150 in yearly fees?

STOP paying the banks for these useless fees! They already make money on every transaction you make on your credit cards (the merchant pays them a transaction fee). And YOU’re the one making it possible for them, so don’t hesitate to get your yearly credit card fee waived.
Here’s what you do when you find your yearly fee charged to your credit card:
- Call your bank up and ask to speak to a customer service staff.
- Be nice. Be polite. Ask for a waiver of the credit card yearly fee.
- (If you need to) Say how you’ve been a good customer, paying off your credit card bills on time, etc (and you should be!!!)
That should do the trick.
If you’ve been a really “bad” customer, paying only minimum sum, having an outstanding balance all the time, then you might have to resort to this:
“What, you can’t waive my fee? Nevermind then, I’ll use my <insert other bank’s name here> credit card instead. Can you please cancel this card for me? Thanks.”
That should get them waiving your fee in a hurry. If it still doesn’t work, then you must have been a really bad boy/girl! No gifts for you this Christmas! In which case, just cancel the card (then you won’t be charged the yearly fee) and then sign right back up again.
I’ve one or two credit cards with literally every consumer bank in Singapore and this has worked for me all the time - never ever had to pay a single cent.
Leave a comment if this works for you!
