Cost of a Proposal

What ring do i get? Where do i ask? When will it be the right time? How do i pop that question? Do you have these questions running through your mind? If the answer is Yes, you are suffering from Pre Proposal Syndrome.

(This is Cost #2 in the The Cost of your Life! series)

We will attempt to reduce some of that anxiety by discussing the cost of a proposal in Singapore today.

In traditional engineering tack, we break a proposal down to it’s components.
Ladies this reduces that trembling hands and stammering voice when we propose.

1) Proposal Ring - diamonds and settings are another field of study altogether so we shall focus on what money can best buy us in each category
2) Location - this could be local or overseas or even at home
3) Time - dawn, dusk or that special moment
4) Method - surprise, dinner date, special occasion

The following is not exhaustive and guys, below is just a guideline to costs for that special moment, you will need to be creative yourselves.

BUDGET:
1) Proposal Ring - $1,000 and below, this buys you a pair of wedding bands with the lady’s ring fashioning a small diamond. The ring doubles as a proposal ring.
2) Location - $100 and below, at home or locally. This can be where you first met or a place where u enjoy meals together.
3) Time - No Cost. Do it when she is in the best of the love mood, after a favourite activity.
4) Method - $100 and below. Enough for a bouquet and a nice meal, you can at least ask the traditional way. or from what i heard dangling a ring on a Precious Moments figurine with a note also works.

Total Costs: About $1,000

DESIRABLE:
1) Proposal Ring - $3,500 and below, this buys you a really nice diamond ring(0.5 Carats, Ideal Cut, F Colour and VVS2) Other details like polish, symmetry, fluorescence and culet will add or reduce the cost.
2) Location - $1,000 and below. This can be local or nearby for example Blue Point Bay Villas in Bali or Victoria’s Peak/ Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong by Jetstar.
3) Time - After dinner or during sunset after a walk on the beach/harbour or peak
4) Method - $500 and below. Get that big bouquet of her favourite roses and bring her to a restaurant like Au Petit Salut(Harding Road) where you can savor fine french cuisine and maybe a nice piece from the piano.

Total Costs: About $5,000

EXTRAVAGANT:

1) Proposal Ring - $10,000 and above, this buys her a diamond ring she will never forget you for(1.0 Carat and above, Ideal Cut, F Colour and VVS1) Double excellent polish and symmetry, no fluorescence and no culet.
2) Location - $5,000 and above. A flight to Romantic Europe, Paris, Venice or Rome. A flight to Paris on an SIA Airbus A380 would surely add to the spice.
3) Time - When she least expects it and is enjoying the time of her life
4) Method - $1,000 and above. A night at Moulin Rouge or dinner on the Paris river cruise. Taking French lessons before hand learning Je t’aime(French for “I love you”). The ring and the location has done their part, all that remains is for the man to ask.

Total Costs: $20,000 and above

Advice: To get a good deal on diamonds and rings which is sometimes the main cost of a proposal, one can try Blue Nile a nasdaq listed leading online retailer of diamonds and fine jewelry. If you have someone in the States who can bring it over to you, you can even save 7% on GST.

Advice: Plan as much as possible, even though the moment is spontaneous. Leave very little to chance. Bring that handy credit card along to avoid embarrassing moments that will spoil the night. Be absolutely secretive. It would be good to hint the lady on which of the four is absolutely crucial. An extravagant ring in Singapore and at home might just make it or a fairly desirable ring in Paris will do.

Guys either way, you have to love the gal and the gal has to love you no matter which of the above you choose.

Happy Proposals.
